Profile
Adlai S. Hardin, Jr. is a United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Southern District of New York. At the time of his appointment to the bench in 1995, he was a partner in the New York law firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy.
Judge Hardin earned his B.A. degree from Princeton University in 1959 and his LL.B. degree from Columbia Law School in 1962.
He served as an enlisted member of the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1963, engaged in training. He continued his military service in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1963 to 1966 and in the New York National Guard Special Forces from 1966 to 1968.
He joined Milbank, Tweed as an associate in 1963, became a partner in the litigation department on January 1, 1971 and remained with the firm until assuming his judgeship.
Judge Hardin was a member of the Second Circuit Bankruptcy Appellate Panel from its inception in 1996 until its termination in 2000.
He has been Chairman, Vice President and Trustee of the Federal Bar Council, as well as Chairman and President of the Federal Bar Foundation. Judge Hardin has served as Secretary and Chairman of the Committee on Professional and Judicial Ethics of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, as well as Secretary of the Association and member of its Executive Committee, its Special Committee on Lawyers’ Role in Securities Transactions, its Special Committee to Cooperate with the A.B.A. in the Revision of the Canons of Ethics, and its Committee on Professional Discipline. He has served as well on the New York State Bar Association’s Committee on Professional Ethics, Judicial Election Monitoring Committee and International Litigation Committee. Judge Hardin is a member of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges, the American Bankruptcy Institute, the Federal Bar Council, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York and the Westchester County Bar Association.
